Exercise Physiology

  • What is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP)?

An accredited Exercise Physiologist is a university qualified allied health professional, who specialises in the delivery of exercise, lifestyle and behavioural exercise interventions for the prevention, management and treatment of multiple chronic conditions, injuries and disabilities. AEPs prescribe specific exercise programs and provide behaviour change strategies to treat conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, depression, COPD and many more.

AEPs work in conjunction with general practitioners, and with other allied health professionals forming a multi-disciplinary treatment approach. Eligible patients can be referred to an AEP by their general practitioner, under a GP Management Plan and a Team Care Arrangement (MBS Item 721). Under this scheme your GP can allocate a total of five sessions to various allied health professional as they see fit.

Exercise_Program_ParramattaAEPs are eligible to treat patients who are covered by:

    • Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA)
    • Medicare (Enhanced Primary Care Plan)
    • Workcover
    • TAC & Health Insurance Rebates

Scientific and clinical research has shown strength exercise to be highly effective in treating multiple chronic conditions. Like medicine, a single bout of exercise produces a dose-related response specific to the intensity and type of exercise undertaken. Therefore, it is imperative that the frequency, duration, intensity and type of exercise are individualised for specific conditions to produce an optimal health outcome.

As your health and safety is our priority, you may be required to visit your general practitioner for a physical assessment prior to participating in regular exercise. This will not be applicable to everyone.
